About the Author
Teacher, Minister, Musician, Mother, Grandmother, and Mentor, Becky Croasmun has been in some venue of ministry for 45 years. She has taught children, teens and adults. She has spoken at women's retreats, worked in youth camps, spoken on the mission field and pastored alongside her husband of 29 years before he went home to be with the Lord. She has endured the pain of losing a loved one through death, the tragedy of having a child turn to drugs and has personally had the experience of a doctor telling her she has an incurable life threatening disease. Through all of this, she has discovered how to have faith and hope that even when bad things happen, life's dreams are shattered, God is still in control we must hang on to the last THREAD OF HOPE, God is there, He loves you and He will not fail. Becky is currently residing in South Texas and is planning seminars and retreats to minister to those hurting long with her daughter, Bridgett. She speaks regularly for churches and women's groups. Heart For Mission?

I read the eBook edition in my free time over two days. If you are a Christian and have a heart for missions then I think you will enjoy this book. Becky Croasmun has compiled, in book format, letters her grandparents wrote during the time they were missionaries in China; 1936-1940. You might want to grab a tissue or two while reading this book. To read about the faith of fellow believers who sojourned long before I was born was inspiring and refreshing. I liken Legacy of Faith to be a modern day Fox's Book of Martyrs. This book needs to be read. Buy it, read it, and help spread the word.

Sixty years ago a young Tennessee Williams wrote a play looking toward the year 2001. Stairs to the Roof is a rare and different Williams' work: a love story, a comedy, an experiment in meta-theater, with a touch of early science fiction. Tennessee Williams called Stairs to the Roof "a prayer for the wild of heart who are kept in cages" and dedicated it to "all the little wage earners of the world." It reflects the would-be poet's "season in hell" during the Depression when he had to quit college to type orders eight hours a day at the International Shoe Factory in St. Louis.



Stairs is Williams' revenge, expressed through his alter ego, Benjamin Murphy, the clerk who stages a one-man rebellion against the clock, the monotony of his eight-to-five job, and all the dehumanizing forces of an increasingly mechanized and commercial society. Ben's swift-moving series of fantastic adventures culminate in an escape from the ordinary that is an endorsement of the American dream. In 1941 with the world at war and civilization in danger of collapse, Williams dared to imagine a utopian future as Ben leads us up his stairs towards the Millennium.



Stairs to the Roof was produced only twice, once at the Playbox in Pasadena, California, in 1945, and subsequently at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1947. Now, in an edition meticulously prepared by noted Williams scholar Allean Hale, Williams fans can share this play of youthful optimism.

The drama concerns Benjamin Murphy, a clerk who wages a private war against workers' slavery to the clock and the growing anonymity of the average person in the mechanized world of the year 2001, when the play is set. Not one of Williams's best works, but worth considering for his rank in American theater.

Tennessee "Y2K" Williams!

Following closely upon the heels of NOT ABOUT NIGHTINGALES and SPRING STORM, this latest New Directions release is refreshingly optimistic for Williams. In this early play, he didn't feel confined to three acts, but instead wrote nearly twenty vignettes, some only a few lines long, to tell the story of Benjamin Murphy, employed at the Continental Branch of Consolidated Shirtmakers. Very impressionistic, this play opens with mechanistic technae in the background as Murphy's supervisors wonder where in the world Murphy is. He's literally found stairs to the roof! A place to smoke, but also a place to dream and to breathe fresh air. As the scenes proceed, the story becomes more and more fantastical and wild, with obsession and foxes and carnivals and millenial magic. Great fun--I'm teaching it to my high school freshman English students this year!

Outdated and innaccurate.

This book is very outdated and not entirely accurate. It really contains only a fraction of the available Tolkien language material, and there are some languages that nobody even knew existed when this work was published.The chapters about Dwarven names and those of the Hobbits and Rohhirim are good, though. As for the rest of the book, if you want up to date, accurate info, I advise you to go to Helge Fauskanger's excellent web-page, Ardalmbion [online] the biggest and best resource on the net or in print.

Good for when it was published, but very dated now

This book is a good attempt to catalogue the languages of Middle Earth, most notably the Elven tongues Quenya and Sindarin. However, since it's publication a lot of material has been released by Christopher Tolkien, including additional information on Tolkien's languages. As a result, the vocabulary in this book is very limited compared to what Tolkien linguists have discoverd and reconstructed. The grammer is even worse - much of it is oversimplified even for what was available at the time, and now there are even more glaring errors. For example, Sindarin consonant mutations, a very important part of Sindarin grammer, are given no treatment whatsoever.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this book. At best you'll be getting an incomplete picture; at worst, an incorrect one. If you want to learn Elvish in either form, I recommend Helge K. Fauskanger's "Ardalambion" site. It has some decent dictionaries (though there are better ones elsewhere on the net) and very exhaustive treatments of the grammer and syntax of Quenya and Sindarin. Best of all, it's free, and always up to date with what the latest research into Tolkien's languages has revealed.

Not too comprehensive, yet Accessable

I discovered this book back in 1980, when it first came out. At the time it was without a doubt the best source I had ever seen. Unfortunately the tiny book was poorly constructed and eventually deteriorated from over-use. I am thrilled to see it still available here, as most conventional locations return querries with blank stares. The Histories books by Christopher Tolkien may be more comprehensive, but the information is handy in Noel's text. Unless I encounter a high elf, the translations are adequate for most needs and more convenient than lugging around a ten volume hard bound set. Last I would note that Ms. Noel gave us a lexicon for fantasy long before the current craze (i.e. Klingon language resources) and thus was way ahead of her time. An old favorite...
