Ugh! Too bad...

I was very excited to get this book in hopes it contained new insights (so little has been written in depth) into one of the great electronic bands of our times but unfortunantly he really doesn't have any. Problem for me was Paul uses WAY to many quotes from Julian Cope's hyperactive book on Kraut rock- I already have that book and think it's pretty ridiculous itsself. When Paul steps out and writes his own opinion the book starts to have meat. But it lacks real depth and insight. Too much is skimmed over and he has an annoying style of writing two versions of every chapter, one skimmed one so-so. The British writer Miles wrote an excellent book on Pink Floyd and he also wrote the program notes for the Stratosfear tour book. It's REALLY too bad he never wrote a book about T.D. But bottom line this is it for now. The book does make you want to check out some of their more lame recordings- but tread carefully overall.

Written like a music critic

Mr. Stump has written Digital Gothic like a long and tiring review of the bands work. And in 'formula' critic fashion he has something bad to say then retracts it a few paragraphs later. Though some of the insites into T.G. are interesting, they seem second, third, forth hand at best. First hand personal interviews with the band would have been nice. I suppose the biggest disappointment of all is that such a ground breaking band with such a rich history has so little written about them. This can be due to T.G.'s trade-mark 'cool' mannerisms that they adopted (and warmed a bit with age) as they became older but none the less, Mr. Stump definately did not dig very deep. Repeating himself often by simply rewording his intent and direction as if to fill the pages so the thin book wasn't 10 pages, the author simply likes to read his own writing.
Tangerine Dream has to be my favorite band in modern history but I found the book boorish.
It only deserves a rating above two due to the fact that it helps feed the fans of T.D. who have to pick at bits and scraps to indulge their interest in the facinating artists that truely desearve the title.

It'll do for now

I bought this book because there are no others on the subject! It is dauntingly slim for a band 33 years old and deals fleetingly with certain areas of the band's history. That said it did answer many questions and was well enough written. It also whetted my appetite for more music. I would have liked to see a larger volume that could have taken time to go further in depth on this band's history, but for the price I am not complaining.

About the Author
Guitarist, lutenist, author and teacher, Frederick Noad grew up in England. Originally trained on the violin and piano he took up the guitar in his early teens.
After graduating from Oxford he came to California in 1957 to organize a story department for the J. Arthur Rank Organization in Hollywood. When the film company suffered some setbacks and had to curtail its U.S. plans Noad decided to stay on. Soon after he was offered a job playing the guitar, which had become a favourite avocation, and he began to teach and to write for the instrument as well.
Thus began a long and happy (if unexpected) musical career. At this time he studied composition with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco at the latter's home in Beverly Hills and attended master classes of Andres Segovia and Julian Bream as a performer. Noad's first book, "Playing The Guitar" became a paperback best seller in the sixties, and this success lead to a succession of further instruction books and anthologies (listed below).
In 1966 Noad launched the award winning TV series "Guitar with Frederick Noad" for PBS The programs were enthusiastically received from coast to coast, and were credited with introducing 100,000 new players to the instrument. The currently running educational television.series is a colour remake of the original with the benefit of the latest electronic techniques .
Noad has been a faculty member of the University of California, Irvine, and the California Institute of the Arts. He has performed as a soloist, as part of a duet team, in concert with a lyric tenor and also as a continuo player in early opera. In addition to the guitar he plays the lute and theorbo.

Do not buy digital version

This can really only be read in a physical copy, not a digital one. They have scanned each page, which means you cannot change the font size. I was trying to read it on a full sized monitor and can barely make out the text.

Using with Instructor

I'm taking weekly lessons and this is the book my instructor teaches from. The material is presented very logically and methodically. Over, the past 9 months of use, I can "see" the thought and effort that went into creating and organizing the material. I feel like I'm making progress yet am constantly challenged and engaged by the material. My teacher will also sometimes jump forwards and backwards in the material when he senses my eagerness and frustration, respectively. I will always recommend beginners study with a teacher, there's simply no better way to learn classical guitar IMO. But, if you cannot afford that luxury, you can't go wrong with this book.

So why only four stars then? Because music books should ALWAYS be spiral bound so they will lay flat on the music stand. Publishers take note: release a spiral bound version, and I'll happily buy this book again.

Great book to learn guitar fundamentally and classically

I played guitar before buying this book, but mostly chords and strumming with amateurish picking. I picked up this book to get a more fundamental and classical training with playing music on the guitar. If you are self-learning, you got to be aware of pacing yourself so that you can be adequate with progressing lessons.

The language is good but could be helped with a more detail descriptions with certain lessons or better illustrations. I found myself struggled more than once figuring out whether or not I'm following the instructions correctly. Other than that, it's a big book with songs that can keep you occupied and learning for years.

A must have item

A must have if you use a missal. I don't need to refer to it often but when you are switching years or church seasons it really cuts through the red tape and directs you to exactly where you need to be for the Mass. I buy the new one each year.

Modest, Humorous & Thorough

A few years ago at an airport, I got a call from Howie Jacobson. "Hey Perry, the people who publish the 'Dummies' books asked me to write an AdWords book and I said yes. Um, I hope that's okay."

I'd taught him AdWords early on, and he didn't wanna tick me off by competing with my own books.

"No problem, Howie. I just want to make sure all the people in the AdWords cartel are my friends."

Howie is a very good friend of mine and I'm proud of him and his book. I also know his co-authors, Joel and Kristie. The three of them run the online marketing firm Vitruvian. Allow me to tell you about Howie's book.

The first thing I like about this book is the cartoons. AdWords has gone from being a glamorous "bright shiny object" for make-money-fast types (deservedly so) to being quite a complex undertaking for large accounts.

The result is that about half the AdWords books and courses out there are dreadfully boring. They read like computer manuals. It's a shame to do that to AdWords because it's a game for people who understand people, just as much as it's a game for people who do spreadsheets. Howie's occasional humor is appreciated. You might want to use some humor in your AdWords career, as well.

And unless you want to drill down into your AdWords campaigns with Excel pivot tables and mind-numbing detail, this book contains all the basic information you need to build a large and successful campaign.

My favorite chapter is The Ten (or so) Top AdWords Mistakes. Success in AdWords is largely about having layers of refinement that most other advertisers don't bother with. This tells you what the 10 most important layers are. If you already spend significant dinero on AdWords and want an instant improvement, this chapter will pay for your book a dozen times over.

And the case studies in the following chapter highlight different dimensions of thinking that you need to solve different kinds of problems. The advantage Howie & company have over most people is, they've worked in dozens of different industries, where click behavior varies widely from one to another. This chapter is bound to show you something you'd never notice on your own.

One last thing: Howie's modesty - to the point of checking in with me before he went and wrote the first edition of this book - tells you something about him. He under-promises, over delivers, and treats readers, vendors and customers with respect.

When you're laying down your cash to grow a business, that's a big deal. Howie respects your dollar and that's what makes him a worthy teacher.

Way Beyond AdWords!!!

This book should be read not only by people trying to learn about AdWords but also by those interested in narrowing down their market niches. I have spent hundreds of dollars in marketing materials, I hold an MBA degree but I must humbly admit this is the first time I actually understand my market niche down to the color of their socks.

It is amazing what you can do today with Google Tools and their readily available information, but it takes a book like this to learn and understand this powerful source of information and Howie Jacobson does an incredible job at communicating it.

Outstanding reference

Alright, well I actually have bought the book so here it goes:

This book will walk you through EVERYTHING. It'll tell you how to research your market, do the initial setup, and of course manage an entire campaign. Better yet, he gives you tips on what to do once you get someone to look at your site to increase the chance of them following through with your offer. I cannot recommend this book highly enough if you want to get serious about running Adwords campaigns.

And the icing on the cake? There's a certificate included for $25 in Adwords credits to get you started - more than what you'll pay for the book here on Amazon. How can you go wrong?
