Paradise on earth – your own idea of the very best life for you and your family. Is it possible or only a dream? This book shows it is not only possible but actually happening now all over the world in communities where thousands are now actively engaged in creating the life of their dreams. Manitonquat, a Wampanoag elder, storyteller, philosopher, poet and communitarian, shares his perspective as a tribal person that we are all tribal people. Human beings became human when they came together for mutual support and protection. For a hundred thousand years we evolved the best social system – the circle of equals, where all were respected, honored and supported. Most people today have little hope to affect a culture where a few own and control the resources of the world and its governments and are now destroying the environment through a global economy that makes the rich richer, the poor poorer, and all of us mere consumers and spectators. Quietly a few people have begun to leave that system and create free societies of people supporting each other and living sustainably close to the Earth, taking responsibility for making the best life for their children. As you read this book you may long for that too, and you will learn how you can do it. We can do it. Together there is nothing we cannot do. It is time. It is time for us to settle and find our place on this Earth. It is time to make a safe, free and loving home for our children. It is time for a new world of compassion, peace and beauty. It is time for a new vision of humankind. It is time for the Age of Flowers.

A former editor of the native liberation journal Heritage and poetry editor of Akwesasne Notes, he is the author of nine subsequent books. He was a co-founder of the Tribal Healing Council, a member of the North American Indian Spiritual Unity Movement, directs the Mettanokit Prison Circle programs in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and is advisor to The Nature School. very good, as usual, from this author
By Peace Village
Manitonquat thinks big. His book Ending Violent Crime Cheaply and Permanently: A Vision Of A Society Free Of Violence doesn't just talk about incrementally handling a small portion of the population, no, it is ending violent crime, cheaply and permanently. This book is entitled Have You Lost your Tribe? The Pleistocene, a time when humans lived in small tribes, In Search of Ancient Ireland: The Origins of the Irish from Neolithic Times to the Coming of the English notes this as one example among many- is still remembered as a sort of Golden Age, vaguely. Now, Journey to the Ancestral Self: The Native Lifeway Guide to Living in Harmony with the Earth Mother (Bk.1) approaches this from the viewpoint of skills, of living in the native way. That is useful, but not the focus of this author. Manitonquat goes straight to the core, the heart of the matter, with very simple approaches, to living in a healthy way in community. It's a short book, but nonetheless a powerful book, well worth getting, if you have an interest in this area. I myself would supplement what he says, with a book such as The Intenders Handbook; a Guide to the Intention Process and the Conscious Community, which addresses community circles in a slightly different way. Native American ideas about healthy community are slowly slipping into white man culture. One of the most powerful examples is Alcoholics Anonymous. Yes, AA is a healing circle, very much like a native circle, works in the same way. Native peoples were smart enough to have the circle first, and not go through the addiction, and then go to the circle. Well, traditionally anyway. Healthy community is the result of intent. The Key to The Secret: How to Manifest from the Heart covers intent better than any other book I've read to date, although The Reality Creation Technique is good, also, even if it doesn't have page numbers. A couple of people on the Internet want to criticize this author. They say he isn't Wampanoag! Well, one of his parents was, in fact, Wampanoag. He speaks at least some of the Wampanoag version of Algonkian. He has the theory of give-away, you bring in all the knowledge, awareness, whatever that you can, and then pass it out freely to all who will receive. He lives his life that way. This book is part of that, and a precious chunk of wisdom it is. I sent a copy of all of Manitonquat's books to a friend, who has an interest in this stuff- that friend loved them also.Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community's Assets is also useful, if you live in white man culture, however that book needs the base of this book. Everything comes from the heart. Some of his critics think he should give his stuff away for free. Well, ok, but we live in this culture that costs money. Manitonquat is extremely generous anyway. When Sitting Bull went with Buffalo Bill's show, to England, he was utterly shocked to see poor children in the street, and he gave them money, all he had. He couldn't believe children could be deprived that way. Manitonquat thinks that way, he is always giving away- that is part of who he is, however, it is also nice to be able to pay for groceries. I believe I have a copy of every book this guy wrote. There is deep wisdom in his books, wisdom I sought for many years, and mostly didn't find. I am very glad he shares his knowledge. I put it to use in the city I work in. OK, my contribution was small, but it was something. Something is better than nothing. For this author's critics- there aren't many- I would say, get off your duffs, and write something better. Take all that energy you put into negative stuff, and put it into helping people. Critics do nothing to help others, as a rule. No, Manitonquat isn't perfect, but I'd trust him with my life, and I can say that about few people.

Everyone should read this!

Oh wow, I LOVE this book. It so perfectly and eloquently answers the questions my lonely, longing soul begs to know. Humans need deep connections with each other, and this is a wonderful guide back to our tribal human roots. I savor every word. When I finish the book, I plan to share my knowledge with others and hopefully even make a drastic life change. THANK YOU, Manitonquat.

so inspiring
By David
There is an old Chinese proverb, that those who say it is impossible need to get out of the way of those already doing it. This guy shows those who are already doing it. This book goes very well with Tony Burroughs' books, such as The Intenders Handbook; a Guide to the Intention Process and the Conscious Community, and others including The Law of Agreement: Discover the True Power of Intention. Lynne Twist notes the 3 major limiting belief systems: scarcity, bigger is always better, and that's the way it is- in Unleashing the Soul of Money: Find Sufficiency, Freedom, & Purpose Through Your Relationship with Money. Our entire economic and political system is built on scarcity. Remove scarcity, and everything shifts, overnight. This is a useful book, because once our current system falls apart, we will need to move into precisely the sort of supportive community described here.

Dante: The Poetics of Conversion, by John Freccero

John Freccero enables us to see the Divine Comedy for the bold, poetic experiment thatit is. Too many critics have domesticatedDante by separating his theology from hispoetics. Freccero argues that to fail to see theconvergence of the letter and the spirit, thepilgrim and the poet, is to fail to understandDante's poetics of conversion. For Dante, body and soul go together and there is nosalvation that's purely intellectual, no poetrythat is simply literary.

The essays that form this book were originally published between 1959 and 1984.They are arranged to follow the order of the Comedy, and they form the perfect companion for a reader of the poem. With these essays assembled for the first time, we can nowsee Freccero's stature: he is the best contemporary critic of Dante. Freccero is that rarearticle, a critic of eclectic and not dogmaticpersuasion. Throughout Freccero operateson the fundamental premise that there is al-ways an intricate and crucial dialectic at workbetween Dante the poet and Dante the pilgrim, and that it is this dialectic that makesthe work so profoundly dramatic, one of thegreat novels of the self.

Thanks to Freccero we readers have theComedy whole again. Freccero calls uponmedieval philosophy, cosmology, science, theology, and poetics to enable us to traverseDante's moral landscape without losing ourway in the confusions of minute exegeses. Ina secular age Freccero enables us to see thispoem as what it is, something wholly otherthan what we might believe or write. Indoing so he shows us the most that languagecan achieve in any age, secular or not.

From Library Journal
Students and teachers worldwide will applaud this collection of Freccero's articles, destined to prove of lasting importance. In an arrangement based on the structure of the Commedia , the articles enable the contemporary reader to approach the astonishing poetic coherence of Dante's poems without sacrifice of the poem's rich historicity and detail. It is an indication of the inner unity of Freccero's arguments that the articles, though they span some 25 years, present a powerful cumulative effect even though reprinted nearly unchanged. Indispensable for academic libraries. Ronald L. Martinez, French & Italian Dept., Univ. of Minnesota, Minneapolis

not for the beginner
By J. C. Woods
This was the first book I read on Dante. It is a collection of marvelous little essays, well-presented and well-written on particular aspects of the Comedy. Since it was the first thing I read, I was a little lost (Freccero makes no attempt to integrate his essays with the larger narrative and, since his purpose is to cast a spotlight on particular limited episodes to show how the fit within the whole, one can hardly blame him). This book is a bit advanced for the beginner who is probably better off withDante: A Brief History (Blackwell Brief Histories of Religion)or A Modern Reader's Guide to Dante's the Divine Comedy. I prefer Hawkins. Gallagher is more religious; Hawkins more scholarly. And of course, there is my own book that splits the difference Dante's Journey: A Field Guide to the Infernal Regions

Militant and Triumphant: William Henry O'Connell and the Catholic Church in Boston, 1859-1944, by James M. O'Toole

"Militant and Triumphant" aims to fill a major gap in the historical record of American Catholicism by presenting a portrait of Cardinal William Henry O'Connell and his significance in the Church and his times. Focusing on both the triumphs and controversies of O'Connell's career, James M. O'Toole chronicles the history of the catholic church in Boston in the first half of the 20th century. The biography begins with a discussion of O'Connell's Irish immigrant youth and education and his early positions as rector of the American College in Rome and bishop of Portland, Maine. O'Toole convincingly demonstrates that, as a bishop, O'Connell actively built his own public image while ambitiously campaigning for the position of archbishop of Boston. The most enduring success, O'Toole argues, of O'Connell's 37-year tenure as archbishop of Boston - despite a sexual and financial scandal surrounding his nephew, the archdiocesan chancellor - was his elaboration of "a personal style of leadership that was different from that of earlier bishops, changing the expectations for catholic bishops in America by thrusting on them the role of public figures they have generally sought to play since". Throughout, the book examines O'Connell's cultural and symbolic leadership of New England's Catholic population, and describes O'Connell's role in defining American catholicism as both "militant and triumphant": asserting its cultural vision beyond narrow denominational boundaries into broad areas of public morality, and confident of its eventual triumph over secular standards.

Power and Its Limits at the Apex of the American Roman Catholic Church, Depicted in a Biography of a Gay, Corrupt Prelate
By Gerald Parker
"Militant and Triumphant: William Henry O`Connell and the Catholic Church in Boston, 1859-1944" (University of Notre-Dame Press, 1992), by James O`Toole (a professor at my undergraduate alma mater, the University of Massachusetts at Boston) is a no-holds-barred biography of this figure. William O`Connell happens to be the prelate loosely depicted in the novel, and in the film based thereon, both titled "The Cardinal", although the novel and the film, unlike O`Toole`s scholarly biograhy, only hint at the depravity that lurked below the surface, away from public view, of Cardinal Abp. William Henry O`Connell`s life. O`Toole`s own book reveals O`Connell`s many faults, but it does not pillory him.

This biography renders a fair account of O`Connell`s life and career and of the religious milieu of O`Connell`s time, when Roman Catholic faith and worship flourished, as yet unsabotaged by the grinding vulgarity, liturgical downgrade, superficiality, the outright unbelief that have set in so widely after 1965, and lastly and perhaps worst of all (reflecting so much of the rest of these problems), the dreadful "Novus Ordo" liturgies which came into use at the dawn of the 1970s, as well as all too much of the other sheer rot and decline that so have come to bedevil and to mar the Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. Let`s face it, regarding O`Connell himself, without O`Toole exaggerating anything, one comes to understand the personal shallowness and failings of this priestly-turned-prelatical careerist and opportunist quite well enough simply by reading what O`Toole reveals about O`Connell, such as concerning:

-- pilfering of church funds,

-- self-indulgence, love of luxury, and frequent absenteeism to travel abroad (the lastmost expensive hobby giving rise to his nickname of "Gangplank Bill!),

-- nepotism,

-- tolerance of secret clergy marriages (including that of his own nephew, Mgr. James O`Connell),

-- arrogance and bombast (which recall, among vintage comix characters of yesteryear, the risible "Major Hoople" a lot more than the likes of the heroically powerful and wealthy yet virtuous "Daddy Warbucks" of "Little Orphen Annie"),

-- secretiveness and hypocrisy; an example of this is O`Connell`s own "closeted" homosexuality (though O`Toole approaches this more gingerly, expressing more reservations about it than have some others, whose accusations point to O`Connell as the source of the systematic practice and clerical tolerance of the beastly pederasty and ephebophilia of the Boston Archdiocese`s priests that have resulted in the outbreak of terrible scandals during the episcopates of his successors over the decades subsequent to O`Connell`s death),

-- selfishness,

-- bullying,

-- real cowardice (despite all of his bluster, posing, and tormenting of the vulnerable), making him likely to back off cravenly from many strong confrontations (despite his public relations image of steadfastness and courage),

-- general worldliness and indifference to spiritual matters such as liturgy, praying the Breviary, and other matters of truly religious importance beyond the Church`s most materialistically and blatantly institutional concerns.

-- and there is too much more to continue to enumerate here!

The book is exceedingly well researched, with copious use of primary manuscript sources as well as of all kinds of printed literature in book and serial form, as anyone who follows up the many back-references will discover for himself.

Only a fuller treatment of O`Connell`s worthy efforts at music is lacking, which O`Toole mentions here and there but without covering so well as O`Connell`s musical contribution merits (to account for perhaps with the assistance of an academic or other practising music professional). The man who became Cardinal of Boston, if he had followed another career path, could have become an accomplished professional pianist and composer, perhaps a singer, too. I once had the opportunity, early in my music library career, to catalogue a bit of Cardinal O`Connell`s fine Latin Church music in manuscript (though he is best remembered for his pious and once popular vernacular hymns), which partly is how I became interested in this ecclesiastical figure. Cardinal O`Connell became rather well known for his pre-Vatican II hymns, which were genuinely popular as productions of musical piety for those times.

The book makes for a good read and a first-rate contribution to the study of Roman Catholicism`s history and sociology, not only in the Archdiocese of Boston, but in North America more generally.

History Generates Organisational Problems: O'Connell
By Phillipwh
Good book, interesting for Catholics to read. O'Connell's naked ambition was apparent to local priests and bishops as he slithered to the top job he sought.
If what this book claims is correct, O'Connell was not fit to be a catholic priest!

I love the tongue in cheek "the closer you get to the centre of the apple, the more likely you are to meet the worm." Worms do well in Church insecurity which has been dragged bleeding into the modern age.

Pius IX excommunicated those left and and centre when he lost the Papal States, a loss which was in fact a liberation for Italy for the Church. (read: Prisoner of the Vatican.

It is in the context of this fear and suspicion that people like O'Connell can wriggle their way to the top. Still to this day, Bishops are appointed by a Rome (rather than by the local church) fearful of modernity, a Roman Bureaucracy which tries to undo Lumen Gentium guidance of Vatican II. It is in the environment of suspicion, where priests must appear to toe the line as O'Connell did, that the pedophiles have masquerading as priests while the decent toiler was sidelined. There is a good book on Cardinal Moran in Sydney. I would love some good heavy historical work to done on Cardinal Spellman!

From Publishers Weekly
Among the 24 stories and 25 poems in this fictional overview of a popular sport are surprises from such illustrious names as Evelyn Waugh, Joyce Carol Oates and Walt Whitman-though the more turgid, macho prose of such genre giants as Alan Sillitoe and John L. Parker sets the book's overall emotional tone. The better stories break away from the repetitious variations on the theme of competition: Sara Maitland's "The Loveliness of the Long-Distance Runner," for instance, explores the oppositional thoughts of a woman runner about to enter a marathon and her female, non-athletic lover, who is both attracted and repelled by the nature of her partner's hobby. Oates's "Running" is an unusual, stream-of-consciousness narrative about a nameless woman who, while running in the woods with her lover, perceives a physical threat from a group of men. On the darker side, the title character in James Tabor's "The Runner" is attacked by rednecks in a remote area and decides to fight back, with startling results. This collection should prove indispensable for hard-core road warriors and of significant interest to sports fiction fans in general-and may even contain enough surprises to gratify readers in the mainstream.

From Booklist
Recreational runners have no trouble finding articles and books on how to increase their speed, carbo-load before a marathon, or handle interval training. But try to find a nice short story or poem about running. To answer this running void, so to speak, in sports literature, editor Battista presents more than 20 fictional stories and novel excerpts (of course, there's an extract from Alan Sillitoe's Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner) about running as well as 24 verse selections on the subject. The writers range from the nearly unknown to the well-known and include such moderns as Joyce Carol Oates and Toni Cade Bambara and such classicists as Homer, represented by a selection from The Iliad, and A. E. Housman, with his elegiac "To an Athlete Dying Young." Whether runners will sit still long enough to muse over Rudyard Kipling's or Walt Whitman's verse remains to be seen, but to requests for running stories, this book provides suitable if not always riveting responses. Encompasses all the emotions of running: excellent
By A Customer
This book should be in the hands of every runner. The short stories are amazing. The different portrayals of running can appeal to anyone, from beginner to advanced. Some of the stories will bring you to your race days and get your adrenaline running as if you are runninf the race. I can only read them one at a time because I get to pumped up and have to relax.
The poems are very eclectic. They capture the crazy thoughts that go through your mind while you are running. They also are beautiful descriptions of a very basic act. I loved them all. Every once in a while I read one before i go run. They make you think, and isn't that what happens on a run. These poems give you good mind fuel.

Great collection of stories and poems about running
By Chad
I posted this review originally at fourtrails.com.

What it is: A collection of short stories and poems about running, featuring works by authors you've heard of (Joyce Carol Oates) and some you probably haven't (Eddy Orcutt).

What it isn't: A uniform collection of descriptions of lungs bursting, chests heaving, legs flying, and so on. Though there are plenty of those descriptions as well.

Why I read it: I once wanted to get a degree even less lucrative than a PhD in Philosophy-an MFA in Creative Writing. These stories let me imagine life as a real athlete and a real writer.

Description: If the syllabi of a PE teacher and an English teacher had a love-child, the first text on this love-child syllabus would be this book. It contains examples of truly spectacular writing from canonical writers such as Joyce Carol Oates, W. H. Auden, and Walt Whitman, as well as many stories and poems that have been mostly forgotten. There are stories about athletes and coaches, predators and prey, heroes and villains.

There are several stories that would justify the price of the book all on their own. Harry Sylvester's "Going to Run All Night" is a story about a young soldier who must run an impossible distance in order to bring a message to a support unit. It's a twentieth-century version of the story of Pheidippides, but much more visceral. George Ewart Evans' "The Medal," a story of a young white man trying to return an ill-won medal to an older black man, is an examination of white privilege in the 1950s.

James Tabor's "The Runner" haunts me in ways reminiscent of some of the short stories of James Tate, and might be the best story in the lot. Another contender for the best short story is Joyce Carol Oates's "Running." The entire story consists of four sentences-three short and one long. It's masterful. I can hardly pass a woman on a trail now without wondering whether she has the same fears as the main character in Oates's story.

Oates's story isn't the only one to sit outside the archetype of macho dramatizations of competition and conquering (though I happen to enjoy those macho dramatizations). Sara Maitland's "The Loveliness of the Long-Distance Runner" is a story about a lesbian non-runner and her running partner. Toni Cade Bambara's "Raymond's Run" is the story of a young female sprinter and her younger brother, Raymond.

The collection of poems is also very enjoyable. Ron Rash's "Running the Mile Relay" painfully captures the reality of young men facing the military draft, moving from the "easy courage" of facing pain on the track toward the concluding verse:

Tight as the baton,

we gripped our certain knowledge:

this running in circles meant

more than anything coming.

The blurb on the back cover by Runner's Gazette is accurate: "This book is a must for any runner who thinks and experiences." If you like your running-related-reading to go advice on training and nutrition, this book is for you.
