Hands-on involvement separates the craftsman from the collector. Whether you are an armchair craftsman or a shop dust veteran. you are invited to participate in the process of tool making described in the pages of this book.
These tools harken to the classic period of woodworking, 1700 to 1900, when a student made his tools as part of his education in moving from apprentice to journeyman. In the late 1800s a series of changes in how wood tools were made took place. The blades became integrated into more complicated adjustment mechanisms, and the tool body was made from a casting rather than a block of wood. Wood tools became the province of the metal shop. What you see in this volume recaptures both the look and the feel of classical wood tools, as well as reclaims the making of them by woodworkers themselves.
You will find tools that can be made for woodworking, by woodworkers, in the wood shop. They are insightful of how tools are made, inviting to be put to use, and worthy of collecting. Explore this world in Making Wooden Tools. With the resources at hand in the wood shop, you can do it.

Must Have in Your Toolmaking Book Collection
By Bryan T.
I've decided I want to take a hybrid woodworking approach with less emphasis on machine & power tools (not eliminating them altogether), and also am interested in learning more about metalworking, including toolmaking. Good hand tools are expensive as it is. But what to do if you have sons you want to teach the craft and want everybody to have their own tools, but can't afford to do so? You learn to make tools together!
The emphasis in this book is wood planes, which it covers well, teaching several construction styles, and giving you enough information to build yourself a full set of planes. There are other more specialized books on the subject that give great detail on hows and whys on building one type of plane. This book gives greater breadth with enough information to build a full set, including molding planes, compass planes, router plane, and spoke shave. The author also teaches you basic plane blade fabrication without having a full blacksmithing smithy. The author further assumes that if you're going to need to make your own tools, you probably don't have suitable work surfaces or toolbox either, and gives plans and instructions to make your own starter shop furniture or portable shop furniture.
Where this book falls short is in the area of the other primary woodworking hand tools-chisels, saws, marking & measuring tools, and bench accessories you use with the tools. Including information on making different styles of shooting boards, bench hooks, and other work holding devices would have been nice. I did appreciate the two poor man's Moxon vices that can clamp to a bench/table or bolt to a sawyer's stool. If you want to make your own chisels, you'll need to get blacksmithing references. If you want to make handsaws, including making the blades, there aren't any reference books, but Google is your friend. This book does show how to make a curve cutting bow saw, but that's it.
Overall, this book could have been much more thorough to cover the other principal hand tools woodworkers use since the title is "Making Wood Tools" not "Making Wood Planes". However, for the quality and quantity of information the author does give, I believe this book still merits 5 stars and a place in your core reference collection if you want to make your own hand tools.

Get back to the basics.
By John L Downing III
This is a good book for someone with a mechanical or woodworking background. I like it because I enjoy the history as well as the practice of woodworking. One thing about the old shops, they were a heck of a lot quieter than the modern, power tool-equipped shop!
