In the period before the French Revolution, the grands sujets of history and myth dwarfed the emerging genre of paintings of everyday life, including "animals and fruits," garden parties, morning toilettes, kitchen duties and family scenes. Yet for reasons evidenced in the 230 color and 60 b&w illustrations of this lavish catalogue, that latter genre enjoyed a huge popularity among collectors and art connoisseurs, including Diderot, and foreshadowed the modern developments in art to come less than a century later. Essays establishing the historical context of genre painting will surely be of interest to scholars of the period, but verge on numbing for lay readers. The label copy in the latter half of the book is much more engaging, offering detailed insight into each painting in this travelling exhibition (which will be at Washington D.C.'s National Gallery of Art this fall). In particular, the writing on Chardin, with quotes from his contemporaries generously interspersed, reveals just how original this painter was-and how controversial. About the Author
Yale Richmond, a former U.S. Foreign Service Officer, worked on U.S.-Soviet exchanges for more than twenty years, including a tour of duty as Conselor for Press and Culture in the American Embassy in Moscow. Yale Richmond is also the author of Into Africa, From Da to Yes: Understanding the East Europeans and Practicing Public Diplomacy: A Cold War Oddyssey.

Interesting, if lacking in bite

What do you call a book that’s laced with copious amounts of nonsense but is still worth reading?

From Da to Yes, as its name implies, is a guide to the nations of eastern Europe excluding Russia, which is covered in Yale Richmond’s companion book From Nyet to Da. Richmond himself, so far as I can tell, is one of those weedy little neoliberal twerps who went to eastern Europe in the nineties to facilitate in the region’s “democratic” and “capitalist” transitions (read: help Westerners steal everything that wasn’t nailed down). Indeed, the book is dedicated to the Americans “who are giving so generously of their time to assist in the democratic transition in eastern Europe.” We’re in for some rough sledding, folks.

Still, From Da to Yes is an interesting and informative cultural guidebook, provided you can read between the lines and decipher Richmond’s squid-like prose. He’s clearly an academic, as evidenced by his clinical, dry writing style and unwillingness to make any kind of judgment about the peoples he’s writing about. For example, here’s a section from one of the first chapters, on Poland:

"Poles have two codes of behavior, one public and the other private. In public, they can be pushy, demanding, distant, abrupt, and rude. In private, they are warm, generous, hospitable, and loquacious. Conversations are lengthy, and goodbyes never seem to end. As the Poles say, 'The English leave without saying goodbye. The Poles say goodbye but do not leave.'"

Read: the Poles are a bunch of blabbermouths.

Still, From Da to Yes is nothing if not comprehensive. The book is short on practical information for tourists such as cost of living and sights to see, so don’t buy it if you’re looking for a Lonely Planet substitute (though given that the book was published in 1995, it wouldn’t be useful for that purpose anymore anyway). Richmond is squarely focused on describing the cultural and historical attributes of the Poles, Hungarians, Romanians and more. Additionally, if you’re of eastern European descent and interested in tracing your ancestry, the book has an interesting appendix full of resources and advice. You just need to wade through a lot of pointlessness to get there.

As I mentioned already, Richmond’s academic perspective prevents him from calling BS where appropriate. Many of the chapters drag on due to him repeating information that was already pretty well-stated in the introduction. For example, he keeps making a point to delineate each culture’s hospitality to outsiders, oblivious to the fact that it’s virtually identical from country to country. Additionally, Richmond lacks the balls to just admit that a lot of peoples in eastern Europe, such as the Macedonians and Moldovans, simply aren’t that noteworthy.

This would be somewhat forgivable if From Da to Yes applied the same level of detail to all of the cultures it discusses, but it doesn’t. The section on Belarus is embarrassingly skimpy, for example, and all the nations of Yugoslavia are cramped into a single chapter. Additionally, Richmond spends an odd amount of time on information that should merit a footnote at best. For example, he spends multiple paragraphs discussing how each nationality treated Jews in World War II.

What saves From Da to Yes is its historical information. Richmond gives you a bird’s eye look at the pasts of Poland, Albania, Bulgaria and more, useful if you’re a history buff or looking to augment your knowledge if you’re planning to make a trip to the country in question. If you keep your BS detector on, From Da to Yes is a solid resource if you’re interested in and/or traveling to eastern Europe and want to know what to expect.

Bird's eye view

This is an anthropology book aimed more at business travelers than tourists or lovers. It is based substantially on his personal experience, which is at least authentic, but limited, for such a large area. Note that Russia is not included in this volume--it rates its own book. The generalizations are necessarily broad, but they are more insightful than the traditional ethnic stereotypes. There is hardly any science here, and you will be disappointed if you are an anthropologist. On the other hand, if you are businessperson who had assumed that everyone is pretty much like your fellow Americans, it will be an eye-opener.

Of course, quite a bit has changed since 1995. The effects of the 2008 crash and the 2009 Russian anti-American propaganda campaign are not anticipated here. The author was right about the instability of Crimea.

A great mystery book filled with action and suspense.

In this book Nancy and her friends Bess and George, who are all girls, are chaperoning on a two day field trip. The fieid trip is at the Royal Chocolate amusement park. Bess has a candy bar wrapper qualifying her to a $1,000,000 dollar prize and a trip to the amusement park. The candy wrapper is a fake! Bess is accused of couterfitting the winning wrapper.
The reason I like this book is because it is filled with action and suspense. There are terrifying tricks, cars being run off roads, people getting thrown on upside down rollercoasters without seatbelts.
This is a great book and I advise you to read it.

Life is like a box of Roller Coasters

I loved this book and couldn't put it down. It takes place at a amusement park where Bess gets a winning wrapper! When she goes to claim her prize she finds out that someone else has already won the million dollars! Well of course Nancy thinks that this is another one of the cases that she just has to solve! Nancy is on the case!
This story is about a compelling mystery that involves: The Science Sleuths, who are a group of kids on a field trip at the park, Joyce Palmer, who is the attendent at to Chocolate Factory, Mr. Castle, who is the president at the factory, Mr. Tumey, who is the boss at the factory, Bess Marvin, one of Nancy's mystery solving companions, George, the other companion, Nancy Drew, the detective who is on the case, Diana Nugget, the other contest winner, Phil Nugget, Diana's husband, and finally Andrea Cassella, who is the Science Sleuths chaperon.
This story takes place in the park in modern times. ... Find out what happens to Joyce when you read Nancy Drew and The Chocolate Covered Contest.
I would recomend this book because it a good hard mystery and has a lot of curves and bumps, just like the roller coaster that Nancy gets stuck on!

This book is da bomb!

I love this book. It is the first Nancy Drew book I've ever read and it was really good. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I was soo tempted to look at the last page. But I didn't because it would spoil it. All in all, THIS BOOK IS DA BOMB!!!!!!

Upon first glance of this book, my jaw dropped open and I stood there flipping from page to page. I cannot overstate the vast amount of knowledge this book contains. Each subject is covered from a basic point to a most advanced look. Huge equations cover the pages, yet more elementary concepts are explained in the simplest ways. But if you are like me, be forewarned! Opening this book you may find yourself flipping from page to page, concept to concept, and the original issue you wanted to research is long forgotten.

Outstanding self teaching tool for EE's

The book covers a lot. See the Table of Contents. The main thing to note about this book is the writing style. It is incredibly easy to read and learn from. Even seasoned professionals will find plenty to justify the purchase. I think its strongest usage should be with EE students. I recommend it highly for EE students as it covers much more than straight EMC material. Like circuit analysis, transform operations, circuit design,electromagnetic theory. It takes time to explain many everday things in good detail as examples of theory application.

True the paper is thin. You can see through it to the content on the other side but you quickly get used to this. Suggestion for the next edition is break it into two volumes and use better paper.

Complete Coverage of EMC

Mr. Kaiser is an authority on EMC and this book brings together a career of research in this field. Materials from his other accessible works are included. Likely the most complete assembly anywhere of EMC/EMI reference tables, charts, and comparative test results. A best value - to own the same coverage one would expect to buy several texts.

One suggestion is to print the next edition on a different thin paper, perhaps vellum. A higher cost would be justified in improved page opacity and strength, and probably permanence. Not at all a handbook, it's a thick single-volume encyclopedia, and a keeper.

Greatest single collection of EMC

I recommend this book to others all the time, even out of school this book has more pages of reference tables than you will find anywhere.

Kaiser is a boss, and while his classes might be itimidating his book and knowledge is unbelieveable. After a few classes with this book, one day you will realize you need to look something up, and you know exactly what page it was on. Scary.

Vladimir Smakhtin was Head of the Water Availability, Risk and Resilience Research Department at IWMI, Colombo, Sri Lanka. He is now the Director of the Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
