Review: Sphere of Irony #2: Strike: Dax

Strike by Heather C. Leigh is the second book in her Sphere of Irony series. It CAN be read as a standalone, I'm proof, I did NOT read book one, Incite and had no problems with the storyline. I will most definitely be reading book one, however, as Heather C. Leigh is fast becoming an auto-read author for me.

This is the troubled story of Kate and Dax. We start in Hackney, London. Not the best neighborhood, poverty runs rampant and crime rates are high. Kate and Dax have been in school together since primary school but Kate despaired of ever having Dax notice her. The day comes, though, when he does finally notice Kate and he is left wondering how he never truly saw her before now.

These two characters come together and fall apart over the span of a few years throughout this story. Sometimes through no fault of their own, other times through misconception or misunderstanding. It's a tragic tale with a happy ending that will leave you wanting more from the guys of Sphere of Irony. It left me desperate for Adam's story (Book One) and I'm definitely going to keep up with this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. From my very first meeting of Dax in book 1 I was intrigued by him. He was always described as a big guy who never let his emotions show, hence the reason that Kate started calling him Iceman. We find out in his book the reason for such a emotionless Dax and the wall he constantly kept erected. Kate who we also met in the first book is very relate-able in the aspect of young women not believing that their good enough and combined with the low self esteem leads to disastrous thoughts. I love that Dax finally showed his emotions and let Kate know that he wanted her because whenever these 2 entered a room the sparks flew off the pages. Over protective Dax is a thing of beauty and when it was time for a little payback against a vindictive ex-roommates of Kate's it was beautifully done. I am greatly becoming addicted to the men of Sphere of Irony and definitely can't wait to read the other members story.

I found a new author/series to love!

Dax grew up in the poorest part of London to a family that is all about winning using brawn rather than brains. Growing up with you is a beautiful, sweet and smart girl who grows up into a charming, professional woman with a talent for footy. Fighter to rock star is a huge leap but gaining back the love of his life will be the greatest struggle of all.

Dax and Kate crawled into my heart from the start. Dax’s dad is the head of the household with a rigid set of rules and a family business that all sons are expected to participate and excel in. You could feel Dax’s frustration simmering as he worked on his exit plan. His relationship with his dad, with his whole family, is not simple but it grows along with him as he realizes he has to live this life for himself.

Kate had loved Dax from afar for years and seeing them grow closer, and go through so much, was a ride of emotion that had me glued to the pages. I’m not a big fan of “first person” stories but this author is beginning to convert me. Told from alternating points of view I felt that Dax and Kate came to life and really brought me into their journey. And what a trip – from the highs to the lows, they were not immune to the violence and corruption that exists. A great read that has me eagerly looking for other books by this author – including the first in this series!

Exquisite

I received my book from amazon.ca . The detail and sharpness of the images is amazing. Many repeats from previous books but much better quality photos as well as recent works. For any Odd Nerdrum fan this book is a feast . Many of the paintings have detailed closeups . The brushstrokes are so clear you can touch them. The photos are large , no wasted space with white page framing. The binding is such you can lay the book open and study each image without braking the seam. Beautifully put together and photographed. I can find no fault.

A Visionary Painter-Poet for the Coming Dark-Age

An anachronistic figurative painter who embraced the Old Master approach to oils on canvas in an era when Conceptual Art and Abstract Expressionism ruled the galleries and museums. Odd Nerdrum is one of those artists in the cultural wasteland that was painting in the last three decades of the millennium to keep alive a passion for tradition and craftsmanship. Critics derided his work as 'Kitsch', a word he made his own in his other roles as art critic, teacher, and prolific philosopher of aesthetics. This book, 'Crime and Refuge', is a brilliant selection of over 200 paintings that fall under the thematic jurisdiction of the title. Nerdrum's world is a barren place in perpetual twilight. It evokes both a plague-ravaged dark-age Northern Europe - its people clad in leather caps and jerkins, wrapped in rough animal skins; and a post-apocalyptic nightmare of tomorrow - irradiated survivors navigating the poisoned soil, the only hints of the vanished civilization the rifles slung over the occasional hunters' shoulder. His style resembles most the Symbolists of the second half of the 19th century. G. F. Watts, the foremost British Symbolist among the loosely defined group called the Pre-Raphaelites, and his peers, Edward Burne-Jones and J.W.Waterhouse, are clearly strong influences, as are the giants of Swiss Symbolism: Arnold Bocklin, Ferdinand Hodler, & Giovanni Segantini. The book itself is beautifully produced: about 10" wide by 11" tall, a 450 page brick of thick, black, glossy paper stock. After a couple of concise and interesting essays, the book is all art, flawlessly reproduced. It's most controversial feature is it's exposed binding; this was done to be able to lay the book flat when viewing two-page spreads. I like it, more for the novelty than anything else. As long as it holds together, I'm happy. Usually I like a strong spine and stronger binding; other monographs, such as the Glenn Brown book released by Tate, and Akira Yamaguchi: The Big Picture, published by Seigensha, use 'gatefolds' for viewing long, landscape format works in a regular format monograph. Not everyone will like the exposed spine, so caveat emptor. All in all, however, a remarkable book, well worth the $53.00 pricetag.

Odd, as in the binding being done in such a way that flat viewing is possible with this book. Odd also, with Nerdrum's greatest hits and some I have not seen before. I like the way this book is printed and designed to be used.
Because I am such a fan of the technique of this painter, he could paint a brick and I would enjoy it. Wait, he did.

A must have

This is a great book to use when it comes to providing therapy for clients who are grieving but also help yous deal with the topic of death and the uncomfort you feel when discussing it. This is a must have for not just any clinician, but for everyone so that they get a better understanding of death and how different Ideologies were created in order to help us feel more comfortable and more naive about it.

About the Author
BRIAN KEENE is the author of over forty books. His novel, THE RISING, is often credited (along with Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead comic and Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later film) with inspiring pop culture's current interest in zombies. Keene has also written for media properties such as DOCTOR WHO, THE X-FILES, HELLBOY, and MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE. Several of Keene's works have been developed for film. He has won numerous awards and honors, including the World Horror Grand Master award, two Bram Stoker awards, and a recognition from Whiteman A.F.B. (home of the B-2 Stealth Bomber) for his outreach to U.S. troops serving both overseas and abroad. He lives in rural Pennsylvania.

If you are a huge fan of the Rising, this might interest you. If not, it's okay to skip.

If you are a fan of The Rising, you might enjoy reading this short story. Deliverance is a prequel starring Pastor Martin, who isn't necessarily the most beloved of characters from The Rising crew, and two other characters, John and Rebecca. All three are barricaded inside a church while Ob and his minions rampage across the world possessing humans and animals alike creating "smart" zombies which can use their hosts brains like a book of information to utilize tools, weapons, and memories to defile and destroy humanity.

Unfortunately, this is all touched upon a little and left in the background, which I feel is the bread and butter of The Rising series. However, this story isn't supposed to be about combating the undead.

Without going too much into the plot, Deliverance focuses on Martin's thoughts, background, and the struggle with keeping his faith in God while facing the overwhelming adversity. Further complicating the situation are his fellow survivors who pull Martin in different directions testing his ability to remain faithful to who he is and his belief in God having a purpose for him.

I don't think Deliverance should have been made into a separate novella. It should have been included in "The Rising: Selected Scenes from the End of the World". It would have served as a wonderful conclusion to the collection of short stories revolving around The Rising and it would have served as an excellent callback to the novels. Unfortunately, as a stand alone this book suffers without the support the rest of The Rising's canon.

Along with Deliverance, there are two short stories at the end of the novella. "The Resurrection and The Life" which follows Jesus confronting Ob who comes back from the dead as Lazarus. This was the most enjoyable story of the three.

There was also "The Siqquism Who Stole Christmas" which felt more like a tease than an actual story. A few more pages and an actual conclusion would have gone a long way.

Overall, unless you are a completionist, sadly, I don't recommend this book. Keene has much stronger material in his novels and other short story collections so unless you really really want more from the world of "The Rising", your time would be better spent reading "Earthworm Gods", "Urban Gothic", or "Dark Hallow".

Love this series, love this author, love this publisher … but just one thing … whoever had proofreading detail might’ve maybe dropped the ball a few too many times. I kept getting jarred out of the story, which is really too bad because it’s otherwise great.

The Rising: Deliverance takes us back in time to the very first days of the Rising itself, this time filling us in on how Reverend Martin ended up hiding out in his church before meeting Jim. We get to see more of the events from his perspective, which is able to look at things less as a personal crisis and more as a philosophical problem.

Here’s a good man, a man of faith, a man who’s served God for decades, who’s believed. Now this, and this is not much like what he’s been led to expect of the end times. It throws a lot of questions at him, and not a lot of comfort. It also shows his own struggles with despair, loyalty, courage and temptation.

As a bonus, this reissue of the 2010 edition includes two short stories. As a bonus, I say (and the author’s note says), but they’re far more than a bonus. They’re two VERY different takes on that bad ol’ Siqquism and everybody’s favorite legions-of-the-undead mastermind, Ob.

The first is “The Resurrection and the Life,” a historical piece going back to the first Rising … the one-man show involving Lazarus. Only, as a rather troubled Jesus soon realizes, his good friend Lazarus isn’t quite the same. It’s almost as if someone else, some other spirit, occupies his corpse …

The second brings us a fun bit of silliness holiday special in “The Siqquism Who Stole Christmas.” Sorry to say, this was where my inner proofreader had the most fits over the wrong homonym (but at least it was consistent, there’s that). Ob finds himself in another newly-deceased host, several miles up in a sleigh on a crisp winter night. From there, well, from there it just keeps on getting wackier.

Keene doesn’t want to be known as The Zombie Guy. That’s fair enough, and he’s woven satyrs, Lovecraftian nightmares, urban horrors and hauntings, primitive island savages, and more into the elaborate and expanding tapestry of his literary mythos. He’s certainly not JUST a zombie guy. But there’s something familiar and comforting about a revisit every now and then, and I was glad to see this one happen.

Great book as always from Mr. Brian Keene. Enjoyed the back story of some more of the characters from the Rising universe. Being a native West Virginian, I also enjoyed the geographical aspect of the book, as the small towns and areas described were easily visualized in my head because I'd been to them all.

Bitter and pathetic, but good technical info

Finished reading this book today. Personally, I found the details regarding the technical construction of the record fascinating and a unique perspective on the album. It really makes you appreciate just how much hard work and love went into Rumours. That was probably the most valuable and substantive part of the book.

The rest of the book bounces between utterly irrelevant stories about his dog. And random girls. Caillat tries very hard to give the impression that he was a ladykiller. It's a little pathetic. He ends up coming across as a huge nerd.

Calliat also has a tremendous, enormous ego and is more than happy to give the impression that he was a Svengali that created Rumours using the random cast offs from a bunch of drug addled, sociopathic misfits. Reading "Making Rumours" is to know that Ken Caillat was the single most critical component of that album's creation. Caillat was clearly important, but he seems a little delusional here.

Finally, the book reads as a bit of a hit piece on Lindsey Buckingham. The back story is that the author sold his publishing company on the premise that he could provide insider info and interviews with the principle players. Buckingham asked the rest of the band not to participate, which obviously made Caillat's life difficult. This, in addition to the fact that Fleetwood Mac hasn't used Caillat in many years, results in a common thread of bitterness that runs throughout the book - manifesting most acutely against Lindsey Buckingham. Again, a little pathetic.

A great book when it comes to technical info. Some dirt to read, if you are into gossip, but the whole thing leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I regret buying it.

Opportunity Wasted

I had to give up on this halfway through. It's written by the band's main producer, and while it has some fascinating little tidbits here and there, it is essentially written from an engineer's point of view and would probably only be interesting to musicians. Ken can go on and on about drums, reverb, splicing tape, speakers, soundboards, etc. The promise of the behind the scenes emotional drama between the band never really materializes. Who knows, maybe the whole thing has been blown up in the press, and not that much happened. But even when Ken tells us that something DID happen - such as that Lindsey Buckingham is, in his opinion, an absolute nightmare to work with - we get no details about it. I'm more than halfway through the book and Lindsey has snapped at Ken precisely one time - and it lasted about 10 seconds. Where is this diva extraordinaire he keeps promising? I also had to take off half a star for the casual way Ken cheats on his various girlfriends with not one tiny reflection about it. Call that the '60s, maybe, but if you're not going to reflect on your behavior, then don't include it. I gave up when he introduced his 20-year-old girlfriend to Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks and immediate concludes they must be jealous of her because they were a 'little stand-off-ish." Yeah, I'm sure those two goddess are jealous of your nothing girlfriend, Ken.

A great story told by a great guy.

I liked this memoir. If you loved the Rumours album -- and who didn't love this multi-million-unit monster from 1977 -- you will for sure read this book to the end. Ken paints himself as the easygoing non-imposing even-keel personality in a '70's record industry world packed with gifted creative egocentric musicians, often great talents but a little short on maturation. In this case it's the 5 temperamental pop-rock stars we love, known to us as Lindsey, Stevie, Christine, John and Mick. If you're looking for an inside look at these famous artists and their legendary web of simultaneous angry romantic breakups that occurred as they wrote and recorded an album of songs about their web of simultaneous angry romantic breakups, you'll be disappointed because Ken's book is not about that. He does mention a little of the turmoil as background, but he doesn't belabor it beyond some honest opinions. Plus while he had to remain the adult in the room, he worked for the group and couldn't really dwell on their character flaws. The substance of the 3 fronts' songwriting and performing skills throughout his recount of the production is carefully and precisely deconstructed for us. But the book is actually a rags-to-riches story about a lucky 29 year-old recording engineer who coincidentally fell into this co-producer job for the sophomore album release of a then-unknown band comprised of the splintered rhythm section of a minimally successful blues band from the UK and a folkie American couple from the California Bay Area Peninsula. This unique amalgam of talent just happened to explode bigger than anyone's expectations during Rumours' production and eventual release, in part due to Ken's creative production talents. And before he knew it, Ken was along for the ride.
Ken's writing is very clear and easy to read. He's not much of a joke teller, but his writing is genuine and succinct. Ken was all about the music and the finished product proved it. The music industry put big $ into their rock record products in those days when record sales for big name rock bands were 10X what they are today. One might ask, how does one get a book out of describing the step-by-step, often excruciatingly tedious process of recording an album in the late '70's, that took a full year to finish?
Ken puts in a lot of the details of the recording experience from his side of the glass in the control room, and while he is enthused to tell you exactly how he did it, manages to water down some of the complexities for the non-techie readers. If you are a technical type (as I am), you're going to like discovering the way things were done back in the day before computers, pro-tools software, processing and an infinite number of recorded tracks within a song, technology that is taken for granted today. Back then it was all linear: You played, you sang, and because it wasn't perfect, you sang and you played again and again. It was real compared to the cut and paste recording of today. Does any of this automation available to all today make today's modern records any better? Perhaps the opposite.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this memoir is the accuracy of the events and the people. It was written more like a historical novel, with long dialog passages in sync with the narrative. I was constantly amused by how he wrote all the scenes as if they were taking place in real time. Along with off-page testimony from many of the people back then, Ken must have had his producer's logs and track charts at hand with all the precise details of what precisely happened each and every day. Dates were specific in all cases, which also included the things going on outside the studio like lunches, concerts, parties, girlfriends, etc. Not your everyday bio to be sure. A more accurate title might be `Romours: The Historical Novel`! Ken also does a good job of recreating the look and feel of the late '70s when the business of Rock really soared.
The only negative I would bring up is that there's only so many ways you can describe recording the 11 songs on Rumours. Once you get through basic tracks, then fixing the basic tracks, then changing the songs around, then overdubs and accent tracks, vocal tracks, mixing, even the mastering to vinyl, you're pretty much burned out on those 11 songs. To perk up the goings on, there's a little in between about Ken's love life -- after all it was the '70s -- though none of it led to anything permanent in his life. In the end though, amazed at this guy's luck, you're rooting for him, and you realize his touches in the production of Rumours very much contributed to its mega-success.
All in all, a great story told by a great guy.
