Speeding to Amanda’s rescue in his modified Avro 504 biplane, Jack braves countless dangers, from crocodile-infested streams to an extinct tribe of savage warriors, while questioning his ability to protect those he loves.
But all his courage will mean nothing if Amanda uses the wrong symbols to open Solomon's Chamber, where an ancient deathtrap waits to hurl them all into a pit of deadly iron spikes!

I have not read a book like this in a long time, but it was a great adventure! I loved the fact it was from a Christian point of view and incoporated many historical facts. I loved this book and can't wait to read another book by Dunn.

I knew this would be a Christian book, but it was a fast-paced adventure like I have not enjoyed in quite some time. This would be a great book for men as well as women.

Good read!

Having never read one of Randall Allen Dunn's books, I was a bit skeptical. However, for $.99 I figured I wouldn't lose much if I didn't like it.

What I found was an "Indiana Jones" style adventure with a little romance, a little more God, and a lot more adventure and action. Granted, some of it was a bit hard to believe. But in the style of Indiana Jones, it fit.

This is a well written book (with a bit too much character development for me) with a good flow, with an unfortunate overuse of memories and daydreams that added nothing to the story or characters. (I skipped over them.)

I recommend this book for those that like action and adventure with an archeological bent.

An Amazing Overview of mock documentaries

Any university student doing film or avid fan of documentaries (and therefore mockumentaries) should read this for enjoyment and education. Easy to read, well justified and condensed. This book features a lot of discussion on the movies of Christopher Guest aswell. (Best In Show, A Mighty Wind, Waiting for Guffman)

Professor Watt presents a brilliant and critical analysis of the traditional Islamic self-image, showing how it distorts Western modernism and restricts Muslims to a peripheral role in world affairs. In a scholarly and incisive way, he traces this harmful image to its origins in the medieval period and then to the traumatic exposure of Muslims to the West in modern times. He argues that Muslim culture is suffering from a dangerous introspection, and in his closing chapters presents a constructive criticism of contemporary Islam, aimed at contributing to a truer, more realistic Islamic self-image for today.

Future Soldier as an Army of One

Veterans of battlefields from the US Civil War through current-day conflicts (and, I suspect, from Roman legions) would recognize the actions, attitudes, and behavior of the drop-troops Heinlein describes, even while the weapons and tactics they use in their battles are futuristic.

Here, the commander is an integral part of the troop, sharing in their attitudes and emotions, even while he possesses a broader picture of the conflict and the purpose of the battles they fight. Heinlein's future soldiers are fully human, not a fragment of humanity, and each fights for a reason other than his signature on a contract.

Just as he thought about where the future might lead with weapons development, Heinlein considered how the soldier of the future might change, and concluded that he would not. The "army of one" technology he describes for his space Marines does not isolate the trooper from his fellows; rather it tightens the esprit de corps of the troop by giving them an elite power.

There is much more in the novel than this conception of the future soldier, which makes Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" a much more interesting read than Dickson's "Dorsai!" (which was published almost in the same month as "Starship Troopers" in 1959). New voting patterns in a one-world government, philosophy classes in high schools, levels of citizenship—these are all brought into the mix to support the central tale of the future soldier. But Heinlein's story centers around the starship troopers of the title, and that's appropriate.

You can read either of these books and enjoy the perspective of 1959 on the wars and soldiers of the future. Which direction will the future soldier take? Whether it is Dickson's increasingly-perfected genetic powers, or Heinlein's increasingly powerful weapons carried by soldiers essentially unchanged since Thermopylae, there seems little doubt there will be war.

And thus there will be future soldiers.

Read this book on the bounce!

I enjoyed it very much. I love the movie too and have no problem with the discrepancies between book and film. I think they complement each other well.

Read this book if you enjoy a good military experience story, even if you don't care for sci-fi. Most of the book is focused on the main character's training, which any veteran should be able to relate to. I do wish there had been more combat scenes - the beginning and the end are the most exciting parts!

Don't read this book if you find nothing interesting or have no respect for the military mindset. Avoid it too if you have no tolerance for ethical\moral worldviews outside of your own. The culture developed is not authoritarian, yet not progressive or libertarian either. Gets a little preachy, but doesn't bog things down.

No sex, no cursing, no graphic violence. Just a smart, quick and enjoyable read.

A great coming of age story, interesting political discourse, and wonderful sci-fi writing

After reading a long string of sci-fi "classics" that had interesting premises but sub par writing at best, Starship Troopers was a solid relief. The story is well paced, Johnny is very well defined as a character, and the writing is descriptive without diving into purple territory.

It can get a bit preachy, but given that it's as much a political philosophy book that's not terribly surprising. For the most part, the diversions into philosophy were well spaced, and largely suited the story as well.

If you're looking for a classic of sci-fi literature that will teach you about several modern sci-fi tropes, while also making for a good read, I would highly recommend this book.

Passive Aggression Management Course

This book "Stop! That's Crazy-Making! How to Recognize, Respond To and Recover From Passive-Aggressive Behavior & People" indeed helped me to put a STOP to that crazy making behaviour I frequently encountered in co-workers and supervisors. I am able to STOP giving the benefit of the doubt and label this behaviour for what it really is. I am sleeping better too for being more assertive with passive aggressive people.

It's been said that the extent of most Americans' knowledge of their colonial history encompasses the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In fact much else occurred over a period of almost 200 years: the Lost Colony at Roanoke, the Dutch colony of New Netherland, Roger Williams and William Penn's settlement of Rhode Island and Pennsylvania as havens for religious freedom, the bloodiest per capita conflict on American soil (King Phillip's War), the Palatine migration of the 1700s...

On the eve of the 400th anniversary of the first permanent settlement in America, Jamestown, Ivor Noel Hume's "Martin's Hundred" is an excellent launching point for learning about our antecedents and their attempts at colonization in the New World. Martin's Hundred was settled not far from Jamestown only 12 years after the first Jamestown settlers arrived. At one time the settlement had several hundred residents, with a fort, potter's hut, dwellings, etc. The "town" holds the distinction of being the first settlement destroyed by Indians, in 1622, when two-thirds of the populace was massacred. There was a fitful effort to reestablish the village, but it eventually died out. It was plowed under in the 18th century after a plantation, Carter's Grove, was built on top of it.

The exact location of the Martin's Hundred settlement was unknown until the 1970s, when archaeologist Hume chanced upon it during preparations for a renaissance of Carter's Grove. Hume's book traces the archaeological discoveries and subsequent research of this fascinating village. I was more intrigued by the history, while the archaeological discussion of potsherds and postholes became a little tedious. However, the reader comes away with a great appreciation for the patience, research, and organization that accompanies historical archaeology. Hume had to deal not only with pesky reporters, for whom the discovery represented major news in the popular press, but also cold, rainy weather conditions (which had the potential to destroy valuable artifacts), and the fickle reliability of summer interns.

Hume comes across as a true Renaissance man. For many of the clues and artifacts, he consulted obscure European etchings and paintings of the early 17th century, using these to substantiate many of his finds. A discriminating reader might view this with a jaundiced eye, but Hume is humble enough to avoid making sweeping pronouncements of his finds.

I can't imagine a better introduction to historical archaeology than "Martin's Hundred." Just continue plunging past the endless potsherds and postholes, and you'll be rewarded; much like what happened to me when I saw the photo of a piece of porcelain with the year "1631" etched into it. Truly breathtaking.

The Greatest Archaeology Book Ever!

"Martin's Hundred" by Ivor Noel Hume is as exciting as a detective story and contains the best prose ever spilled on the subject of archaeology. Hume, the Father of Historical Archaeology, was the head archaeologist at Colonial Williamsburg (CW) for many years, and was once given the job of archaeologically investigating the expansive grounds of the James River estate known as Carter's Grove. He was actually looking for the underground remains of 18th century buildings that could be interpreted during tours of the mansion, which was to about to open to the public. What Hume and his associates actually found, completely by accident (as the best mysteries always unravel), was what was left of 17th century Wolstenholme Towne - an English settlement at a place called Martin's Hundred that had been completely lost to history after its destruction in the Indian Massacre of 1622. This book gives a blow by blow description of the finding and further excavations of this long lost settlement, and describes in exciting detail how the archaeologists and other researchers searched the globe for answers to the mysteries and questions raised by the dig. The story takes the reader from Virginia to England, Bermuda, Turkey, Holland and back to Virginia on an epic quest of high adventure. When I first read this book I was a young student archaeologist at Jamestown, Virginia, and overnight it became the best book about an archaeological excavation that I had ever read - although I had not read many at that point. A decade later, and after reading countless other popular and academic books, reports, and articles as a professional archaeologist, "Martin's Hundred" is still by far my favorite. Archaeologists normally write site reports, and if they actually publish anything at all it is laden with all kinds of anthropological jargon and dry, factual descriptions that the public (and even many other archaeologists!) can't understand. This book is the antithesis of that because it was written by a self-effacing, humorous, English gentleman with a great talent for using the English language as it is supposed to be used - with grace and flair and a unique style. I give this book the highest recommendation possible, and only wish that there were more books about archaeology as great as this one is.
