About the Author
Elizabeth Pomeroy earned a B.A. at the University of North Carolina-Asheville, an M.S.W. at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. at The University of Texas at Austin. With more than 20 years of experience, Pomeroy's current teaching and research interests include clinical social work courses with a focus on mental health, health and children, and families; HIV/AIDS interventions; crime victims; interventions for offenders in the criminal justice system; and clinical social work group interventions for children, adults, and families.

Renee Garcia received her B.S.W. from University of Texas, Austin, and her M.S.W. from the University of Michigan. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and currently has a private practice in Austin, Texas, providing individual and family counseling and psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and adults. She has worked extensively in grief and loss counseling at hospice organizations in Austin.

Makes sense of statistics

Someone who puts random pictures of cats in a book about statistics just has to have a sense of humor. Charles Kufs does: a vein of light humor runs through this book, along with a "regular person" writing style and lots of examples and analogies based on everyday situations that make technical concepts easy to understand and relate to. That's important because the concepts and techniques in this book go beyond the basics. Kufs says the book is intended as a "Statistics 101.5" to help people who need to use statistics--but aren't statisticians--actually apply and effectively use what they learned (or are learning) in Statistics 101. I wish I'd had this book when I was struggling with statistics for my undergradate degree. I think they would have made a lot more sense. Kufs goes beyond the classroom, presenting practical and realistic approaches to using statistics in real projects, the way an expert friend sitting next to you would, and he covers everything from the basic concepts to planning and managing projects to evaluating other people's statistical reports. If you're looking for help and advice to actually understand and use statistics, get Stats with Cats. Even if you aren't a cat lover.

Proof that stats can be interesting

A few months ago, I discovered the blog Stats with Cats, written by Charles Kufs. He recently (beginning of 2011) wrote a book about statistics with the same name as his blog. The book is a journey in the world of statistics and data analysis. The focus of the book is not on the technical aspects of statistics but rather how they are used in every day projects. The book can be easily read from the beginning till the end and is very didactic. It's like a story which teaches you how to deal with data analysis.

The first part of the book introduces statistics by explaining data, samples, variables, file formats and many other topics. The second part is about the planning and management of data analysis projects. It's particularly interesting for consultant in data analysis and data mining. In the third part, the author explains variable selection, sampling and variance among others. The next part deals with data quality and descriptive statistics. In the fifth part, you will learn everything you need to know about models. The last part will help you applying your knowledge in your job.

The book contains several advices for consultant as well as data analysis project manager. It also contains a lot of useful tables: checklist for variables, variance control techniques, top ten flaws in data analyses, etc. Screenshots of Excel, SPSS, Statistica are often given. Other tools such as SAS are also mentioned. I'm just surprised of the few mention (one I think) of MATLAB which is a rather important and powerful tool for data analysis.

To conclude, the book is rather... excellent! If you're a beginner, this book will provide you with the tips and tricks you really need to know about data analysis. If you're an experienced data analyst, it will still bring you advices in consulting and highlight issues about communicating statistics. With his book, Charles Kufs has succeeded in several ways. First, stats are not boring! More than that, it will bring you through a pleasant journey in the world of data analysis. Second, he has an amazing number of relevant quotes. And third, he mixes statistics with cats!

Don't do modeling without it

Phenomenal book. If you do any type of statistical analysis, you need this book. It will help you choose the type of model to do the analysis, the method of data collection, and the methods of data-scrubbing (Did you know you will spend the vast majority of your time collecting and scrubbing your data (preparing for analysis) vs actually doing the analysis?). It also discusses the pitfalls of all methods of collection, scrubbing, and analysis.

If you don't routinely do analysis, get this book and start doing it! It will probably save you aggravation and misplaced effort in your job, dispel preconceived notions, and possibly help your career.

It is very understandable and doesn't get caught up in jargon. It reads more like a humorous editorial column than a professional journal.

I just bought two additional copies for some family members going off to college for help with their intro stat-classes.

Incredible!

I can not begin to explain the rush of emotions I felt while reading this book; everything from fear, sadness, joy and laughter! I never imagined a book could so strongly impact my faith and help me realize that I am not alone in my struggles. Regardless of what you are going through in life, this book will help you see that God does have a plan for all of us. Kudos to Denise for her captivating writings and courage to share her story!

Reading this book made me laugh but mostly cry.. Memories of Sean growing up and the Wynn's life during that time came flooding in while hanging on to every word. Denise was so raw and so real. A must read!

Restored Faith

What a wonderful book. My life could not be more opposite than Denise's and was not sure what to expect. I walked away with an appreciation and insight of the challenges raising a disabled child. That was about what I had expected. What I did not expect was learning what it means to have faith and trust in god. Through Denise's book, for the first time, I was able to have a clear insight into Gods Plan and what it really means to have faith and trust in him. Ive never been religious. I believe in god but never really knew how to have faith and trust in him. We have all had bumps in the road and even felt alone during difficult times. Its truly a blessing to finally know that with faith and trust that we are never truly alone. Knowing his plan for us has meaning. Knowing we are loved by God even at our darkest times.
This is a wonderful book for those raising an individual that is disabled. This book is even better for those who would like to find the faith to accept Gods will in their own lives.

Great Workbook!

This is the companion to the book and each chapter is coordinated with it. It has a lot of room to write your responses to the questions asked and helps you really ponder how you feel about your life. Anyone wanting to actually write your feelings, which I would recommend as you read the book (otherwise you won't get the full benefit), will find the workbook exercises of great benefit. I gave it 5 stars because it is very thorough and very helpful. It forces you to really think about how you feel and get it down on paper.

About the Author
Steve Zumdahl is the author of market-leading textbooks in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, honors-level chemistry, and high school chemistry. Recently retired from his long-time position as Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to chemical education. These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Susan A. Zumdahl earned a B.S. and M.A. in Chemistry at California State University--Fullerton. She has taught science and mathematics at all levels, including middle school, high school, community college, and university. She is past director of the Merit Program for Emerging Scholars in Chemistry at the University of Illinois. In addition, she spearheaded the development of a sophisticated web-based electronic homework system for chemistry and is co-author on several chemistry textbooks.
