Excellent / Most fitting for the newly-diagnosed

Blake's book is a great contribution to the world of bipolar literature. While I found his book extremely well-written, as someone who is a "bipolar veteran" I found myself reading many things I already knew, but I was grateful for the opportunity to read the book regardless. I loved his positive, hopeful outlook for anyone who is slapped with the bipolar label. I also thought it was inspiring to read of his own journey with the disorder and to see how far he has come and how much he has helped (and continues to help) other people with this mood disorder and their families.

Blake has a wonderful way of communication - his writing is very fluid and descriptive, and as a writer I appreciated that. I will recommend this book to anyone who is navigating the murky, often-terrifying waters of bipolar disorder, as well as their family members and friends.

Great Book About Bipolar

This book offers a terrific view into bipolar disorder. I enjoyed both Blake's personal story, client examples and helpful tips for those impacted by bipolar disorder. If you are looking to learn more about bipolar disorder this book would be a great resource. I'd also encourage anyone who works with those with mental illness to read this book.

This book is about how the author was diagnosed with bipolar at fifteen, and how after being hospitalized five times was finally successful in a proper diagnosis and treatment. Mr Levine also had a great desire to not only open up about his personal struggles with his illness, but got his degree so he could help others.
On a personal note I am also bipolar and I tried all the same drugs that he discusses in his book, but I was unsuccessful with those drugs.

My wife and I did some research with a book by Abram Hoffer called Niacin The Real Story and determined from that Niacin is very helpful in the treatment of not only the issues with bipolar but other illnesses as well. Niacin may not work in all cases, but in my opinion It is worth checking out.

Great book for getting your feet wet!

If you're looking for a good introduction to syntax, this is a wonderful book for that purpose. Tallerman's prose is clear and understandable and the examples clearly explain the concepts. The book is organized well and both indices and contents pages do their jobs well, something I've found rare in many textbooks.
The questions, however, can sometimes be quirky. The data can be minimal in the extreme and instead the question itself leads the student to the answer. This can make the questions seem just a rehash of the chapter instead of exercises that develop the student's skills. Depending on the professor, it can leave students unprepared for tests and quizzes. These quirks are rare, though, and most exercises help the student well enough.
I'd recommend this book for those learning syntax on their own or for really basic courses in syntax. This isn't really a graduate level book by itself, although with supplements or another more advanced text it is a great way to introduce students to syntax before moving on to the harder stuff later on in the semester.

Good book for students with little background in linguistics

Good book for students with little background in linguistics, besides the basic "intro to linguistics" class, and maybe even without it. I think the appeal of this book in on its use of several examples from languages around the world, and a down-to-Earth presentation of the main notions in syntactic argumentation. It is not a book that presents any theoretical framework in particular (or in general), but you can tell it assumes some basics tenets of Generative Linguistics, like innatism, independence of syntax from semantics and pragmatics, and discretely defined grammatical categories. However, those are, by and large, mainstream ideas that every students must know. Besides that, it is not theoretically "heavy", and that is a plus to me when offering a general class to inform students about the core notions and debates on a field of knowledge. Specialization can come later, when the foundations have been provided, and this books does that job just right.

It is a good introduction to linguistics, however this book doesn't necessarily focus on syntax. It explains how languages work. What it isn't is an overview of syntax from phrase structure rules, through Xbar theory, to minimalism.

Having bought the excellent Understanding Pragmatics book (in this same series) to fill in large gaps in my knowledge of that subject, I bought this book hoping to refresh my knowledge of Xbar and especially subsequent movements in syntax.

This was a phenomenal read, very macro-social, objective, and critical of globalization/Neo-liberal patterns of growth. If social justice is your thing, this book will be recognized as a must read pretty soon.... Very helpful for any higher level undergrad or graduate level courses.

About the Author
Michele Goulet Miller teaches a variety of business-related courses, including business communication, software applications, and medical office courses, at Milwaukee Area Technical College. In addition to teaching responsibilities, she works closely with employers to establish onsite experiences for students in certificate and associate degree programs. She is actively involved in program development based on daily experiences with the employment community in Southeastern Wisconsin. Ms. Miller also co-authors The Basics: English with Dr. Clarice Pennebaker Brantley and Effective English for Colleges with Dr. Jack Hulbert. She currently co-authors Communication Tidbits and Hotlinks¿ and is a past co-author of GrammarLinks, both regular features in the electronic journal, The Balance Sheet. Ms. Miller¿s professional memberships include National Business Education Association, International Society for Business Education, and Association for Business Communication. As a committed parent and community member, Ms. Miller has chaired fundraising events and has served on the boards of a local humane society and a nursery school in the Milwaukee area. She regularly volunteers in the community. Michele Goulet Miller received a bachelor¿s degree in business education from Western Michigan University. She received a master¿s degree in business education from the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater, and a master¿s degree in educational administration and supervision from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Dr. Clarice Pennebaker Brantley frequently conducts seminars at state, regional, and national meetings. She taught communication and other business-related courses for 37 years at the secondary, postsecondary, and university levels. She co-authors "Communication Tidbits and Hotlinks," a regular column in the electronic journal, The Balance Sheet. Dr. Brantley and Michele Goulet Miller also wrote The Basics: English. Among her publications are chapters titled "Listening" in the 2005 NBEA Yearbook and "Communication" in the 2003 NBEA Yearbook. Dr. Brantley maintains active membership in national and international professional associations: National Business Education Association, International Society for Business Education, Association for Business Communication, and Delta Pi Epsilon. A leader in community organizations, she serves on the State and Western Division Board of Directors for the Children's Home Society of Florida, She regularly participates in the Gulf Coast Economics Club, Pensacola Women's Alliance, and the Panhandle Tiger Bay Club. Her education includes earning a bachelor' degree (summa cum laude) in business administration from Valdosta State University and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Good condition a couple missing pages though

This book was in great condition except for a few missing pages at the front of the book and I was able to make copies of the missing pages from another student so I still have a complete book!

I received my book in a timely manner, and it was brand new still in the wrapper. I paid $30.00 less then my college was selling it, especially, for the used book. I had no problem with this company.
