I love these books!

The "Let's Go!" series of travel guides is the best on the mkt., for ppl. traveling by rail, hitchhiking, etc on a shoestring budget. I also gains points for being the only guides that don't assume that 'Merkins just want to stay in, say, Florence "like Merkins"-in a McMotel-that's your Ugly American. What
's the point?

I went by myself, with a back sack and $800 for 6 mos.(I worked there for over and month, in a WorkCamp--DO THIS if you can! Meet ppl from all over the world! It is SO FUN ;) and had one of the best times in my life. If it was late at night, and, I had been out drinking that night and had no idea where I was going to stay (all the ppl in the bar had to go home to houseful of parents, etc)--I looked in this book and it could, very well, have saved my solitary part of the trip.. In Naples, it told me where, at 3:00 AM, to go as a single woman when Italian Navy was in port after 18 month's​.

Loved the ppl, the food, the beach and the "Let's Go" guides--get a life, folks

Just came back from a two month trip around western Europe and this book was great to have on hand. I was torn between purchasing a comprehensive Europe guide or just a few specific country guides but I'm glad that I purchased this. It had enough information to help me plan my trip and my travel days out. I perused it after buying and then read and tore out the pages I needed for my trip. The sense of humor in this book is on point; there were plenty of places where I laughed out loud reading this. The reviews that I made decisions off of were spot on in my case. Extremely glad I bought this book, thank you Let's Go!

Delightful, whimsical, thought-provoking, allegorical novel.

Emir is a young prince in a brand-new kingdom with some rather serious problems to solve. In his kingdom nothing grows old and always remains the same. At his father's request Emir (a rather self-important young prince) reluctantly undertakes two journeys into lands far beyond his experience. The first is a voyage to the Land of the Gods to invent the names of all the creatures and plants in this brand-new kingdom. Gaining knowledge and confidence in his own powers, Emir then goes in search of the God of All Life for help with the kingdom's growing population problem. Emir fails to obtain an answer from the God of All life and upon his return makes one up, and by doing so invents the first lie. Aided by Conscience and Inspiration, who show him the true answer he needs to help his people, Emir finally understand that every living thing should have its own season of birth, growth, and returning to the earth. Wonderfully enhanced with pen-and-ink illustrations, Emir's Education In The Proper Use Of Magical Powers is a delightful, whimsical, thought-provoking allegory and a treat for the mind and heart of all who read it.

Great book for children

My grandmother gave me this book for my sixth birthday, and I have been grateful ever since. This is the story of a young prince in the time just after the world has been created. Emir is a rather typical little boy (headstrong, selfish, etc.), but he learns some very valuable life lessons over the course of his journeys. While this is a children's book, it probably wouldn't hurt some adults to read it and take its lessons to heart themselves.

A Child's Introduction to New Age Philosophy

Emir's Education in the Proper Use of Magical Powers is an enchanting book for children, young adults, and adults. It explores the nature of reality, life, and death with poetic grace and humor. The author creates a lovingly made fantasy world where all things have a purpose even before their creation and all children are sacred even after they've grown up.

The story begins during the early days of Earth. The king of a brand-new kingdom decides to send his son, Emir, out into the world to learn of its wonders and then to pass his newly acquired knowledge on to their people. At first Emir doesn't want to leave behind his pets and his toys, and travel the world in a boat that might be caught in a terrible storm or sink, but Emir's father insists. He says that it is for Emir's benefit that he sends him. In order to become an adult Emir must learn of the strange and unknown peoples, creatures and plants that inhabit their world and find a solution to the kingdom's problem of overcrowding in order to become an adult. Emir leaves home and has one beautifully surreal adventure after another, meeting with ancient mythological gods and goddesses, surviving a nearly fatal storm, encounters with Conscience and Inspiration, taking part in a parade comprised of historical figures who have yet to be born, even leaving his body temporarily, and finally he returns home with an abundance of wisdom and knowledge. He explains the importance of seasons and that everything must have its season, its time on Earth but that time is not eternal. He bestows unto his people a great gift, death, which makes life only that much more precious. Emir transcends life and death, time and space, and shows us humankind's potential for nobility, courage, compassion, and sacrifice.

This book is a wonderful way to introduce children to the concepts of life and death. Author Jane Roberts tells a tale that both simply and eloquently probes the human heart and exposes our potential for greatness. Emir's education is deeply spiritual and philosophical, but never dogmatically religious. It's an open-minded book for open-minded individuals. The story is enriched by the illustrations of Lynne Cherry, whose artwork perfectly captures the cultural diversity of our world while creating a uniquely and superbly rendered vision of a place and time that never existed. This book will appeal to children ten and older, though they may not appreciate its depth and insight, or have the capacity to accept its final message about the necessity of death. As for adults, the text is both comforting and disquieting. As human beings we could learn much from one such as Emir; that faith and logic aren't always contrary, that vulnerability is a form of strength, that inspiration is divine, and that love is eternal. The book is full of personal revelations that will inspire and provoke. Its message is universal and undeniable: We must face our own mortality and yet take comfort in the knowledge that our existence held some purpose, though that purpose is beyond our human comprehension. Only in death can we observe our reason for living... but only in life, through our love, can we learn not to fear death.

And yet the needs of the space industry, telecommunications, energy conservation, astronomy, medical imaging, etc. , place demands for more data and understanding of these properties for all classes of materials - metals, polymers, glasses, ceramics, and mixtures thereof. There have been many useful books, including Specific Heats at Low Tempera­ tures by E. S. Raja Gopal (1966) in this Plenum Cryogenic Monograph Series, but few if any that covered these related topics in one book in a fashion designed to help the cryogenic engineer and cryophysicist. We hope that the introductory chapter will widen the horizons of many without a solid state background but with a general interest in physics and materials.

About the Author
Eduardo Galeano nació en Montevideo el 3 de septiembre de 1940 en el seno de una familia católica de clase media. Hijo de un empleado público y de una gerente de librería, Galeano fue criado en un ambiente de profundas convicciones católicas. Incluso, cuando tenía ocho o nueve años, sostuvo que quería ser santo: «Tuve una infancia muy mística; pero no me fue bien con la santidad». Galeano tiene una larga carrera tanto en el plano personal como en el profesional. Con tan sólo trece años empezó a publicar caricaturas para el diario El Sol, un periódico socialista en Uruguay, bajo el pseudónimo de «Gius» por la dificultosa pronunciación en castellano de su primer apellido (Hughes). Desde muy joven empezó a trabajar; fue obrero en una fábrica de insecticidas, recaudador, pintor de carteles, mensajero, mecanógrafo, cajero de banco y editor. En la década de los setenta un grupo derechista militar en Uruguay lo encarceló. Por esta causa se marchó a Argentina. Sin embargo allí ocurrió lo mismo. El régimen de Videla tomó el poder tras un sangriento golpe militar y su nombre fue agregado a la lista de aquellos condenados por los escuadrones de la muerte. Días y noches de amor y de guerra, se enmarca en los días de la dictadura en Argentina y Uruguay. En esta ocasión se exilió en Cataluña, en Calella, al norte de Barcelona donde publicó en revistas españolas y colaboró con una radio alemana y un canal de televisión mexicano. En este período escribe su famosa y premiada trilogía Memoria del fuego. Con todo, la obra de Galeano no es lo único importante. Vinculado a causas políticas y defensor de la ideología de izquierdas, recuerda cuando siendo miembro de la juventud socialista iba de pueblo en pueblo a hablar de socialismo ante la mirada atónita de aquellos pocos que se paraban a escucharle. En 1985 regresó a Uruguay. Actualmente, tras haber superado una operación en el año 2007, reside en Montevideo. Uno de los lugares que le gusta frecuentar es el café El Brasileiro; además dirige su editorial El Chanchito. En Galeano conviven el periodismo, el ensayo y la narrativa, pero será sobre todo reconocido como un cronista certero y valiente que recuerda el pasado para analizar el futuro que estamos dejando. De trato cordial y perpetuo buen humor, cree que el mejor de sus días «Es aquel que debe todavía estar por venir».

A fantastic book that should be reading requirement of all first year university students in Latin America. Many will feel that the book itself is solely a "bashing" of the United states and other developed nations but in the reality of the history which is carried by the nations of Latin America with regard to their dealings with developed countries the author does an excellent job in presenting the exploitation that has taken, and continues to take place. There will be those that will read it and inmediately will cry foul, communism. Not so. I was an international banker for many years in the region and can attest to the validity of the content.

About the Author

Teodora-Liliana Radulescu received her PhD in 2005 from Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, with a thesis on nonlinear analysis, and she is currently a professor of mathematics at the "Fratii Buzesti" National College in Craiova, Romania. She is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Romanian Mathematical Society. She is also a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews and Zentralblatt fur Mathematik.

Vicentiu Radulescu received both his PhD and the Habilitation at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris 6), and he is currently a professor of mathematics at the University of Craiova, Romania and a senior researcher at the Institute of Mathematics "Simion Stoilow" of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest, Romania. He has authored 9 books and over 100 articles.

Titu Andreescu is an associate professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Dallas. He is also firmly involved in mathematics contests and Olympiads, being the Director of AMC (as appointed by the Mathematical Association of America), Director of MOP, Head Coach of the USA IMO Team and Chairman of the USAMO. He has also authored a large number of books on the topic of problem solving and Olympiad-style mathematics.

A really great book

Around 2000 I had thought that a Real Analysis book should be written in which the various ideas, methods and results could be demonstrated using problems from mathematical competitions. My rationale was that there are many books on real analysis, each with its own characteristics, strengths and weaknesses but, at the end, all of them being very traditional in the core, presenting the material in the same dry way. Unfortunately, soon I stopped thinking about it. That is, until around 2010 when I discovered that a book, as I imagined it, had been published. Obviously, I had missed the opportunity to write such a book first. But I am not sure, even if I had done it, that the result would have been as good as this.

Indeed, I really like this book. It is a beautiful companion to any standard real analysis text. It will make studying more enjoyable and interesting. And it is not only for those who are learning the topic. Students who know it will also benefit as they can study problems they have not encountered in the traditional curriculum. However, the book cannot be used as a standalone text. Due to the problems from the mathematical competitions and from various professional journals which are used throughout the book and which consume the largest part of the book, the main body of real analysis is presented briefly. At the same time, traditional examples, constructions, etc. which are common to standard texts are omitted. Another issue that potential readers should be aware of is the following: Although the title of the book is Real Analysis, there is no measure theory and no Lebesgue integration in the book. The book goes as far as Riemann integration only. I do not believe that this is a serious flaw but readers who will use it while they are studying these topics will not have the opportunity to study related problems. For the remaining topics there is virtually a corresponding problem for each and every idea and concept.

The authors have place considerable effort and work to make this book as good as possible. So, overall, I strongly recommend this book. I believe it should find its way in every serious mathematician's library.
